Air Conditioning and Heating Tips

SAVE MONEY ON COOLING AND HEATING YOUR HOME
To maintain maximum performance, have air conditioning and heating systems inspected regularly by a North American Technician Excellence (NATE) certified technician. Your heating unit should be examined twice annually, while your air conditioning system should be inspected at least once per year. Find "Homeowner Approved" Charlotte air conditioning professionals to assist with air conditioner and home heating needs.

MONEY SAVING TIP - USE A PROGRAMMABLE THERMOSTAT
Significant energy cost savings can be achieved by using a programmable thermostat to align your home’s temperature with your family’s lifestyle. For example, if your home is empty during the day, program your air conditioning and heating system accordingly. In the winter, let the daytime temperature drop to 65 degrees. Similarly, let it warm up to 85 degrees during summer days. In both cases, set your thermostat to make your home comfortable just before your family returns from work or school.

MONEY SAVING TIP - ELIMINATE SOURCES OF LOST AIR
Examine window seals, doors, and other sources where significant amounts of air might escape. While small leaks allow fresh air to enter your home and aren’t necessarily a bad thing, you’ll definitely want to eliminate major sources of air loss by applying a high quality caulk and/or new weather stripping. It’s a good idea to reinspect your home for these inefficiencies once every year and make appropriate corrections.

A/C MAINTENANCE TIP - REPLACE YOUR AIR FILTERS REGULARLY
Air conditioner filters remove pollen, dust, ragweed, and bacteria from your home’s air. Over time, filters become dirty and less effective, causing stress on the system and making it less efficient. Perhaps more importantly, poor air quality caused by a worn filter can also lead to health-related issues for your family. For both these reasons, we recommend that you inspect your filters monthly and replace them at least quarterly.

A/C MAINTENANCE TIP - KEEP THE OUTDOOR CONDENSING UNIT CLEAN
To maintain proper performance of your air conditioner, keep your condensing unit free of debris caused by shrubs, grass clippings, leaves, etc. This important maintenance tip will help prevent the outdoor coil from getting too dirty. If the unit requires cleaning, use a soft brush or a vacuum with a soft brush attachment to gently remove debris from the surface area. If debris is lodged deep in the coil, we recommend that you call one of the contractors featured in our Annual Report.

HVAC MAINTENANCE TIP - INSPECT YOUR FURNACE EACH WINTER
Before each heating season, inspect your furnace’s combustion area and ventilation system. If you find dirt, rust, or other concerns, contact a professional and don’t operate your heater until it has been properly inspected and repaired.
